Riverbend Campsite comprises a hilly property of 5.6 hectares situated on the banks of the Umtentweni River on the South Coast in KwaZulu-Natal. It is situated in a beautiful open flat area along the riverbank, and there is little vlei nearby which is visited by many water birds. The riverbanks are lined with mangroves and river hibiscus.
We cater for holidaymakers and travellers who require central but tranquil surroundings set in beautiful indigenous bush with abundant birdlife. We are conveniently located close to all amenities including Shelly Centre shopping mall and Margate. There is also a laundromat nearby in Port Shepstone, and sporting facilities which include an 18-hole golf course, tennis and squash courts and bowls may be found at the Port Sheptone Country Club. There are several popular restaurants and pubs nearby, as well as a Spar superette in the immediate neighbourhood.
Our main swimming beaches are situated at Umtentweni, Sea Park and Port Shepstone and we are 2 km from the sea by road. The property borders on the Umtentweni River and is unspoilt. You may walk your dogs on a number of beaches nearby and when the river mouth is closed, you can paddle to the sea in one of our available for hire canoes.
You will invariably awake to the sound of the African fish eagle's ringing call;a pair have nested across the river since 1990. You may also see various types of small wildlife including vervet monkeys, blue and grey duiker, tree dassies, porcupine, genet cats and leguaans.
The small, beautiful, secluded campsite is tucked away at the bottom of Riverbend along the Umtentweni riverbank. Access is down a fairly steep tarred road which passes through a pretty forested hillside. Campers will be pleased with all electric grass sites, portable braais available, level ground and large canopy trees. The ablution buildings offer three toilets, three showers and a bath, and there are also three double sinks for washing up as well as municipal hot and cold water.
There is small vlei nearby which is home to a number of water birds. You are welcome to bring and launch your own small rivercraft to enjoy exploring the river and we also have a few canoes available for hire. In addition, fishing can be enjoyed in the river and the small dam.
