Overview
Escape Corona. Cheval Vapeur Horse Farm is situated in the heart of Cape Towns seasonal wetlands in the Philippi Horticultural Area a rural area consisting of vegetable and other farms on the Cape Flats between Ottery and Mitchells Plain. It is a wonderfully tranquil oasis and nature haven. Cheval is away from all crowds & large numbers of people (re Corona Virus)..

It is safe, secluded, peaceful and quiet but surprisingly central to Cape Towns many attractions. It is truly the best of both worlds. The Royal Cape Golf Club and Zeekoevlei bird sanctuary (internationally famous) are within 10 minutes by car. Wynberg, Kenilworth, Plumstead and Muizenberg are 15 to 20 minutes away. The Waterfront and the City Bowl within 25 to 30 minutes. Stellenbosch, Paarl and the wine routes are within 40 minutes and the Cape Point Nature Reserve is some 60km away.

Birds often seen nesting or on and around the farm include Moorhens, Cormorants, Egyptian Geese, Crakes, Sacred Ibis, Hadedas, Cootes, Malakite Kingfisher, Dabchicks, Darters, Hammerkop, White Faced Ducks, Yellow Billed Ducks, Cattle & Little Egrets, Black-headed and Grey Herons and many more. There is also a substantial community of endangered Western Leopard Toads.

The Farm offers 5 levels of basic, self-catering accommodation at very affordable prices
First level: There are 8 open-plan, single-roomed wooden cottages (which South Africans call Wendy Houses) sleeping 2 to 5 people each. Cottages that sleep 2 people have a double bed, the others have bunk beds and other furniture. The cottages share two separate ablutions each fitted with a toilet, shower and basin please note that depending on the cottage booked the distance varies to the nearest ablution but it is never more than 60m away. Each cottage has self-catering equipment: kettle, toaster, hotplates, microwave and small fridge - crockery, cutlery and cooking utensils are also provided. The names of these cottages (with the numbers of people they can sleep) are: Club (4), Gate (3), Dam (2), Jane (5), Downtown (5), Gibson (2), Colin (2) & Johan (2).

Next Levels these are the brick-walled Mews units:
6 units (Tack Room (sleeps 4), Tuck Shop (4) and NewUnits 1 to 5 (2 each)) share the third and fourth ablution facilities (shower, toilet, basin) and have the same self-catering equipment and furniture as the wooden cottages
1 unit (Beverley) has two bedrooms sleeping 5, a kitchen/lounge area and its own en-suite private shower and toilet. There is also running water in the kitchen area. It has the same self-catering equipment and furniture as the wooden cottages
1 unit (TopFlat can sleep 8) has three rooms, a kitchen and its own Toilet and bathroom. It also has a balcony with a wonderful view of the mountain and magnificent sunsets.
Mews Apartment (1 unit sleeps 4) is the most luxurious with 2 bedrooms (each with a double brass bed) and en-suite bath, shower and toilet, a kitchen and a TV lounge with DStv (premium bouquet). It also has a small veranda. There is a sleeper couch in the TV lounge that can accommodate a fifth person.

All cottages and units have their own braai facility guests should bring their own braai tools and grids.
Cheval Vapeur does not have credit card facilities and any outstanding amounts are payable in cash on arrival.

"Highly disappointed in this accommodation.... Cannot believe that they actually charged us money to stay in a room that doesn't even have any of the commodities stated in the ad. Every unit is meant to have their own braai... Thats not happening... Every unit is meant to be fitted with cutlery crockery pots pans microwave oven/stove toaster... Well we had to ask for a a frying pan... There were no cups or glasses... No microwave... Not even sure the heater works.... And if it does you have to climb over the cable that you need to plug into the only plug strip in the kitchen. There isn't even a basin to wash your dishes in.... What kind??? The bedding is dirty... The room smelt like mothballs when its was opened.... Like its been standing closed for years... When asked if we could possibly get a frying pan and spatula i was told by Lesley that she would bring us a spatula and she's running around alot..... And we're still waiting so now we braai using another units braai who have also just arrived and want to use their braai area which we are now using. Over and above we got stuck into a room that we did not ask for., we requested a two befroom four sleeper unit and got stuck into a dark dingy cockroach infested little room ... Will NEVER stay here again even if they paid me to"

"Everything can be improved. Bathrooms to far from rooms. Not clean. No romote for gate. Waited 15-20min every morning to get out. Establishment Response Guest had arranged for a group stay and was unhappy on arrival as her cottage was not suitably close to the ablution blocks. Distance of Cottages from ablution blocks varies from 8metres to 50 metres. Guest moved to a cottage closer to toilets but could have requested such when booking. We give all guests our telephone numbers on arrival and GUARANTEE our attention to any problems, 27/7. If we had received a phone call concerning the gate (which is opened and locked at specified times mornings and evenings for additional security) security would have been contacted to open gate immediately .We are currently busy with our annual redecorating process and not all facilities have yet been dealt with. We apologise to guest for that."

"there was no tuck shop as advertised. Forget to fetch me at the airport. Charged R300 for fetching me at the airport - into town it was only R200. My booked room was not ready. There was a lot of flies"

"2 NIGHT STAY FOR 3 PEOPLE"

"This was our second visit to Cheval Vapeur and we were pleasantly surprised to see that it was in much better shape than the first time. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay, and it was actually a pity we didn't stay longer. The owners are very helpful and always ready for a chat. They were also available late at night with any concerns we had.I can recommend Cheval Vapeur for an experience different to the norm. Despite it not being located in one of the more "tourist friendly" areas of the Cape, we never once felt unsafe. Not during our stay, and not during the trips there and back. It is within 20 minutes or so of most popular tourist attractions. We will definitely consider staying here again on future visits."

"I would like to say the place does not look like it seems on the photos or advert. It was a terrible stay to put it bluntly.1. The cottages don't have their own ablution facilities, you literally walk through a swarm/business of flies to get to the ablution facilities then you have to fight with the flies first before you relieve yourself or take a shower (Unhygienic).2. There are flies everywhere in and outside of the cottages due to the horses being next to the cottages, you can't really have a good night sleep.3. The smell of the horses, you can't even have a descent braai outside or even cook inside because of the heat and flies, therefore you can't even close the door, you will definitely suffocate4. There are not air conditioners or fans due to the heat5. We had challenges with the TV which we had to pay for and ended up not using it6. We literally stayed out all the time and only came to lay down our hats."DEFINITELY NOT FOR LIVABILITY OF HUMAN BEINGS" WOULD NOT RECOMMEND TO ANYONE I KNOW"
